Join our team of volunteers
The Eden Valley Museum is a community museum, run entirely by volunteers.
Who better then to describe the enjoyment and benefits they get from volunteering:
As a volunteer museum steward I have met so many interesting people whether as fellow volunteers or visitor; from the local area or from farther afield. And when the museum is not busy with visitors I can read up on and research the history of the area which I find fascinating. I steward two sessions a month which is not at all onerous and even then, if I am away and cannot help out, that is fine too. I thoroughly recommend joining the team, especially if you have recently moved to the area and want to feel a part of the community.
I discover a little more about our town’s history every time I steward. The museum has so many things to read about which take time to absorb. Many visitors like to chat and tell interesting stories. All the volunteers are lovely – we always have useful conversations with a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit – it is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours.
Stewarding at the museum allows me to be part of our local history. One of the most rewarding aspects is the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of people – from local history enthusiasts to curious tourists. This not only enriches my own understanding but also fosters a sense of community and shared appreciation for our collective past. I feel I make a meaningful contribution to an institution that is vital to our community. It allows me to engage with history and contribute to my community. It is a role that I look forward to continuing for many years to come.
We value our volunteers immensely. We could not open the museum without our stewards and, without our volunteers who manage and care for the collections, there would be nothing to exhibit! This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening the museum and we are immensely thankful to the many enthusiastic locals who came up with the original idea for a museum, saw the project through to its opening in June 2000, and continued to volunteer for many years, a few up to the present day. Thank you all.
