I’ve always had fond memories of school clay classes, and handmade pottery still catches my eye at local craft fairs, reminding me of a long-standing desire to try it again. So, when a new local business, Hands on Clay, opened in Edenbridge, it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally give it a go again.

Rather than committing to a full course, owner Samantha Nixon suggested one of her taster sessions.  It sounded ideal – and even better, I could bring a friend.  So I invited my creative friend Julie to join me for a little pottery adventure.

Samantha sends clear joining instructions in advance, outlining what to expect during the two-hour session, what to wear, and what you’ll be doing – namely, creating two to three pieces of pottery.

We were warmly welcomed on arrival and led into her studio, a cosy and inspiring space filled with handmade work.  Shelves lined with students’ creations waiting to be glazed and fired added to the charm.

Our first project was hand-building a mug from clay slabs Sam had prepared.  She showed us how to imprint designs with shaped cutters using just the right pressure to mark, not pierce the clay.  Each step was clearly demonstrated, and while Sam made it look effortless, we quickly learned it takes practice!

After a short tea and biscuit break, Sam set up the two pottery wheels and demonstrated how to centre and shape clay.  As part of the taster format, we skipped the initial steps and took over once the clay was prepped for us.

Using plenty of water to prevent the clay from drying, Julie and I began shaping our pieces.  Sam showed us two techniques for making either bowls or taller items.  I quickly realised the goal wasn’t perfection but simply shaping something that held together!  Julie discovered that even a mistake could lead to a more interesting and unique design.

Finally, we had to choose a glaze for each item so they could be glazed and fired, ready  for collection in 3-4 weeks time.  We had a fabulous afternoon with Sam and highly recommend this taster session.

Samantha has been working with clay for many years, honing her skills before eventually building her own garden studio.  What began as a hobby has now become Hands on Clay, her full-time venture – bringing creativity to local hands, one pot at a time.
