Sevenoaks Samaritans is a new place to volunteer in Kent and it’s our 2nd birthday.  In just two years we have trained more than 100 listening volunteers and aim to grow further.  We are a vibrant volunteer community, with listening and support volunteers and an active presence in the community in Sevenoaks, Westerham and Edenbridge.

Nationwide, Samaritans answer the phone 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.  Every 10 seconds someone contacts us and we get the chance to make a real difference.

To volunteer with us you need to be 18 or over, you don’t need previous experience or qualifications, but you should be honest, open minded and empathetic.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve gone through difficult times yourself, what matters is that you want to help all kinds of people, from all walks of life.

How do I become a listening volunteer?

Complete the enquiry form online – it’s quick as we just need a few details – and you’ll be invited to book a Zoom interview or to come to an information evening.  If you’re selected, you’ll attend in-depth training.

What support and training will I get?

You will have more than 21 hours of training on Zoom and be mentored and supported as you pick up the phone. You’ll never be on your own and there’s always time to talk through anything that’s concerning you.

What is expected of me?

Volunteers to do one 3-hour shift per week, including one 3-hour night shift each month. You choose the times you volunteer each week to fit your lifestyle.

What’s in it for me?

Our volunteers say that meeting people, gaining better listening skills, excellent training and the satisfaction of helping are just some of the benefits.

If listening is not for you but you’re interested in getting involved, we have plenty of other opportunities.
